Cyclist From Mpls. Killed In Georgia; Driver Arrested On DUI

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A 25-year-old grad student from Minneapolis was killed Monday night when an SUV struck her head-on while she was on a group bike ride.

Ashley Block, who was a studying at the University of Georgia in Athens, was pronounced dead at the scene. The two other cyclists she was riding with were hurt in the crash, and one remains in critical condition.

The driver of the SUV, Whitney Howard, of Hull, Georgia, was arrested and booked on charges of first-degree homicide by vehicle, serious injury by vehicle, driving under the influence of drugs, and endangering the child that was in her Jeep Liberty.

According to Block's Facebook page, she attended Minnehaha Academy in Minneapolis and graduated in 2009. She went on to attend Sewanee and study anthropology at the University of Georgia.
