Crews Knock Down Northern Minn. Grain Elevator Fire
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Fire crews in northwestern Minnesota worked overnight and into Tuesday morning battling a fire in an old grain elevator.
Fire officials in Lake Park, which is about 30 miles east of Moorhead, said the fire started around 7 p.m. in a nearly 100-year-old grain elevator close to the intersection of 3rd and Front streets.
Crews from several fire departments worked to keep the flames from spreading, but a nearby elevator structure, containing about 30,000 bushels of soybeans, eventually caught fire.
Firefighters saved the newer structure, but it sustained considerable damage. Officials didn't specify if the soybeans were destroyed or ruined.
The older elevator, which hadn't been operational in almost 30 years, was a total loss.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
