Crews Hope To Open Eden Prairie Ice Castle Next Week

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Our mild winter has put a popular winter attraction on hold -- for now.

The folks behind the giant ice castle at Mall of America have been busy creating a new one at Miller Park in Eden Prairie.

It was supposed to open Friday, but it's been too warm to make the ice.

The cold November temperatures gave them a good start, but builder Blake Hawbaker says four days in the 50s with rain slowed them down.

"The warm temperatures didn't do us any favors. We built the castle up and then lost about a few days of growth, and then had to shut down again in the warm stretch this last week," Hawbaker said.

They're back on schedule now and are hoping to open on Jan. 3. The castle is about halfway completed.

When it opens next week, there'll be towers, archways and rooms to explore – and even a giant ice slide.
