Crews Finish Installing Memorial Honoring Military Families

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- At the Minnesota State Capitol Thursday, crews installed the final piece of a memorial honoring family members of military veterans.

The monument, called the Gold Star Table, is the last piece of the Minnesota Military Family Tribute.

The Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs says when a soldier is deployed, the entire family is deployed. This tribute honors all Minnesota military families.

"I really like the symbolization of the table because there are so many family gatherings that we have our empty chair in place, and we do always miss them. Every day is Memorial Day for us, so the table is very significant, and I think they did a wonderful job on the design," said Valerie Kennedy, whose son, army specialist Joseph Kennedy, was killed in Afghanistan four years ago.

Veterans Affairs will dedicate the military family tribute on Saturday, June 13.
