Crews Fight Cold While Battling White Bear Lake Fire

MINNNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – It was a tough morning for firefighters as they battled the cold and a fire.

It happened on Hammond Road in White Bear Lake.

A storage shed caught on fire, which created several challenges for crews.

In order to stay safe and avoid getting frostbite, they had to rotate every 15 minutes.

While some battled the fire, others stayed warm inside the trucks.

White Bear Lake Fire Captain Jeremy Andert says another concern was the water freezing and firefighters possibly slipping on the ice.

"We do throw salt down to make sure, where we have water on the ground and it freezes, that we protect our staff. We also have a call into the public works to come out and salt the roads," Andert said.

Captain Andert says cold and hot weather are equally challenging for firefighters.

No word on what caused the fire, but we are told the shed was destroyed as well as a vehicle that was inside.
