Hennepin Co. Attorney: Charges Deferred In Death Of 2-Year-Old

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The Hennepin County Attorney's Office has deferred charges against a man arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of a 2-year-old in north Minneapolis.

The attorney's office announced Monday that it has insufficient evidence to charge Chris Maurice Welch in the death of Le'Vonte Jones.

Le'Vonte was killed when two vehicles, one driven by Jones' father, exchanged gunfire near Penn Avenue North and Lowry Avenue North on July 8. Le'Vonte's 15-month-old sister was also injured in the shooting.

Le'Vonte's father -- 25-year-old Melvonte Peterson -- was also arrested in connection with the shooting. He is charged with possession of a firearm and drive by shooting.

Welch was arrested last week and is expected to be released from the Hennepin County Jail late Monday afternoon.
