Charges: Woman, 71, Bilked From Estate Sales

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A woman from Hopkins is accused of stealing money from her property estate clients. The Hennepin County Attorney's Office says she's illegally collected nearly $150,000.

Mary Jane Thompson, 71, has been charged with theft for a scheme she's allegedly been running since June 2013.

Prosecutors say she would promise clients to pay them 70 percent of the profit within made from their property sale within 30 days. But she'd either never pay up or write them bad checks.

"She didn't do it once or twice, she did it a number of times," Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman said. "So we've just felt obligated to charge. Doesn't matter how old you are, you have to face the music."

Thompson allegedly stole from more than a dozen clients in Hopkins, Minnetonka, and Edina. She's expected to make her first court appearance on August 13.
