Charges: Apple Valley Woman Drove Drunk With Child In Car

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A 35-year-old Apple Valley woman is accused of driving while impaired with a 6-year-old child in the vehicle, according to charges filed in Dakota County Court.

Sina Julie Yim was charged with endangerment of a child and two counts of second-degree driving while impaired in connection with the Oct. 5 incident.

According to the charges, a Lakeville Police officer was on Kenwood Trail near Ipava Avenue at about 1:15 a.m. on Oct. 5 when he observed a vehicle in front of him swerving severely outside traffic lanes and following another car too closely.

The complaints states the officer stopped the vehicle and identified Yim as the driver with her 6-year-old son in the back seat. The vehicle smelled of alcohol and Yim showed signs of impairment. She told the officer she had consumed a few drinks.

According to the complaint, Yim struggled with field sobriety tests and was given a preliminary breath test. Her blood alcohol level was measured at .27, more than three times the legal limit for driving in Minnesota.

The child's father was called to pick the boy up, and Yim was taken into custody.

If convicted, Yim faces up to three years in jail and $9,000 in fines.
