Charges: Man Said 'God Made Me Do It' After Fatally Shooting Friend

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A man claimed he had godly instruction to shoot and kill his friend in Minneapolis Monday, according to charges filed in Hennepin County.

Anthony Collins, 44, who has no permanent address, was charged with second-degree murder in connection to the death of 38-year-old Christopher Porter.

According to the criminal complaint, police responded to a shooting at a house on 1415 Morgan Ave. N. at 3:30 p.m. Monday. There, they found Porter, who lives there, lying on his back suffering from a gunshot wound in the front of the house.

Porter was rushed to the Hennepin County Medical Center where he later died.

Police also encountered Collins, who was wandering around the yard, saying "God made me do it", the complaint said. Police say he refused commands and made his hand into the shape of a gun and put it to his head.

Collins was eventually handcuffed and taken into custody. A .44-caliber Smith & Wesson handgun was found in the grass nearby. It's being tested for fingerprints and DNA, according to the complaint.

Neighbors and other witnesses reported to police that the two men had been friends for years and it wasn't unusual for Collins to visit the house. Collins, however, denied knowing Porter when he was interviewed by police.

Collins first court appearance is set for Wednesday afternoon and the Hennepin County Attorney's Office is seeking bail of $1 million.
