Cars Fall Through Ice At Wisconsin Snow Sculpting Competition

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Wisconsin recovery crews are going ice fishing -- for sunken vehicles.

Over a dozen cars and trucks fell through cracked ice at Lake Geneva's Winterfest and U.S. Snow Sculpting Competition Saturday. That's about an hour south of Milwaukee. Witnesses say they couldn't do much but stand by and watch.

"The cars were sinking, and some of them kind of slid into the water a little bit more," one bystander said. "First it was just a couple, and then a couple people started coming out from the crowd and trying to get the cars that hadn't sunk yet."

Nobody was hurt, but the vehicle owners saw a substantial amount of damage.

The fire department says drivers were not instructed to park there. They did so at their own risk and will be responsible for the damage to their vehicles.
