Burning Restrictions Extending To NE Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Spring burning restrictions will be extended to the northeastern Minnesota counties of Lake, Cook and St. Louis on Wednesday, the Department of Natural Resources says.

Under the restrictions, the open burning of yard debris and brush will not be allowed. Officials say that the burning of yard debris is the cause of most spring wildfires.

And due to the the winter's wimpy snow totals and the rather rainless spring, this season is drier than normal, increasing the risk of potential fires.

Restrictions are currently in place in much of the state.

The DNR says the burning restrictions will remain in place until the land is sufficiently green. This usually takes four to six weeks after the snow has melted.

The restrictions do not prohibit campfires.
