Brothers Receive 30-Year Sentences In N. Mpls. Home Invasion & Rape

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Two brothers learned they will spend 30 years in prison each for invading a home in north Minneapolis and raping two female victims, the Hennepin County Attorney's Office announced Tuesday.

Hennepin County District Court Judge sentenced Reggie and Deondre Bishop on two counts each of first-degree criminal sexual conduct and one count each of first-degree burglary in connection to the July 19 incident.

According to the criminal complaints, the brothers and another man invaded the house in the late evening of July 19. A 14-year-old girl who lived in the house went downstairs into the kitchen and was confronted by the three men. They then took her upstairs and shouted at the mother, demanding where the money was. After searching for the money, the men raped both of the female victims. They then eventually left with televisions, a laptop and cellphones.

In court Monday, Reggie Bishop appeared to not take the sentencing seriously. The victim gave an impact statement, saying Reggie "laughed and joked throughout the proceedings. He'll have [at least] 7,300 days to laugh his way through prison… He'll have to explain to his children why he's in prison."

The victim said it took her 14-year-old daughter several months before she could describe what happened to her.

"How does a grown man torture and rape a 14-year-old girl?" the mother asked. "How do you say 'Now you know what the bad guys look like…' Every single day, I hope he hates himself."

The third defendant, 32-year-old Roynell Taylor, pleaded guilty to the same charges on July 18 and was sentenced on Aug. 19 to 30 years in prison, too.
