Brookview Introduces Bike-Friendly Golfing

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The Twin Cities is known as one of the most bike-friendly areas in the country.

Cycling enthusiasts now have one more spot where they have the chance to ride around on two wheels -- a golf course.

Brookview Golf Course in Golden Valley is the first in Minnesota to offer golf bikes, allowing golfers a chance for some added exercise during a round.

Golf is a game known for its traditions, so change usually happens slowly. But there is constant evolution at Brookview.

"We're looking at things [that are] more interesting to get people to play," Brookview's Tom Moore said.

The golf course opened a new lawn bowling area last season, offering an alternative to the traditional sport.

This year brings a twist on transportation. In addition to the motorized carts, golfers can also try the golf bike.

"A lot of interest in them, a lot of discussions about them," Moore said.

Brent Teele of Orono thinks it is a great concept.

"The guilt of riding a regular powered cart is you don't get any exercise," Teele said.

He is among the first to try this new two-wheeled caddy.

"It's actually kind of slick the way they got this set up," Teele said.

The bicycle is supped up in a way only a golfer can appreciate. There's room for a set of clubs, a cooler for beverages and storage space for extra golf balls and tees.

"Looks like this is pretty much going to have everything you need," Teele said.

The key to the bikes are the fat tires, which allow a golfer to ride on a fairway without fear of causing damage.

"I usually ride a road bike, so it's kind of integrating the two activities," Teele said. "With a limited amount of time I get to come out here and actually ride the course, too."

Even those who don't bike see the benefit of an added bonus on days when even the best golfer can't find their game.

"It's a good way to get a workout," Teele said. "I'm actually out of breath a little bit!"

The cost to rent the golf bikes is similar to a motorized cart.
