Brooklyn Center Man Pleads Guilty To Murder At 4th of July Party
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A Brooklyn Center man has pleaded guilty to second-degree unintentional murder in connection to a fatal shooting at a Fourth of July party last year in north Minneapolis.
The Hennepin County Attorney's office says 25-year-old Joseph Lee Smith is accused of shooting 28-year-old Cabrie Young in the chest after a fight broke out at a party on the 3400 block of Dupont Avenue North in 2014.
The criminal complaint says Young was shot while helping a man who was knocked out in a fight outside of the residence. Young ran into the house, and Smith allegedly kept shooting at him.
"This is a senseless tragedy. Mr. Young had tried to break up several fights at a Fourth of July party he was attending. He was acting as a Good Samaritan when he was shot," Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman said.
Smith pleaded guilty before his case went to a jury. Sentencing is set for July 8, and he is expected to serve anywhere for 11 to almost 17 years in prison.
