Federal Judge Overturns Conviction Of Brendan Dassey

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- One of the subjects of a popular documentary series may soon get out of prison.

A federal judge Friday overturned the conviction of Brendan Dassey for the 2005 murder of Teresa Halbach in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. The crime was the subject of the popular Netflix series "Making a Murderer," which focused on Dassey and his uncle, Steven Avery.

In the ruling, the judge found that investigators made false promises to Dassey, while his defense attorney did not provide proper representation. The judge ordered authorities to release Dassey within 90 days, or begin proceedings on a new trial.

Dassey was 16 at the time of the murder and was sentenced to life in prison for the crime, along with Avery. The judge's order can still be appealed to a higher court.
