Body Recovered After Plane Crashes In Lake Superior

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A body has been found in the wreckage of a plane in Lake Superior.

The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office received a call at about 11:24 a.m. Saturday reporting that a single engine aircraft had taken off from the Duluth International Airport, gone off the radar and was believed to have crashed into Lake Superior. Conditions were very foggy in the area as visibility was down to about a mile.

Search teams later found some plane debris near Brighton Beach, and according to a Duluth News Tribune report, a body was found in the wreckage. The St. Louis County Fire Department said just after midnight Sunday, they located the aircraft fuselage in about 135 feet of water with the pilot inside. The pilot was believed to be the only person on that plane when it took off.

The body has not been identified, and the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office said what led up to the plane crashing is still under investigation.
