Bloomington makes big hiring push for school bus drivers

Pauleen Le tries her hand at driving a school bus

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. -- The Bloomington school district working this summer to make sure it's ready for the upcoming school year.

The district currently has a big hiring push for bus drivers.

District leaders said they're looking for 20 drivers, which is double the amount they look to hire in a given year.

Tim Rybak, director of operations, said of the roughly 10,000 students in the district about 6,000 take the bus. The pandemic and worker shortage have made hiring tough so they've made changes to make the jobs more attractive during an ongoing worker shortage.

Hiring pay starts at $21.53 and goes up to $41.76 with five years of experience including benefits. Drivers now have flexibility to work morning shifts taking students to school or just the afternoon shifts taking them home.

WCCO's Pauleen Le spent the morning with the district to learn more.

People can apply in person at the Bloomington Transit Center on Lyndale Avenue, or online.
