Bitter Blast: Blizzard Warnings, Difficult Travel On Super Bowl Sunday

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – After Minnesotans awoke Sunday to temperatures in the 30s, a bitter winter blast is expected to sweep over the state just in time for Super Bowl 50.

The areas that'll be most affected are southwestern and extreme western Minnesota. A blizzard warning for those areas goes into effect Sunday afternoon, and travel in those ares is expected to be extremely difficult.

Strong winds with gusts up to 55 mph may create whiteout conditions and there's the possibility that highways will close.

In the metro, the wintry blast will arrive as the big game kicks off. The storm system will bring a drop in temperatures, blowing snow and wind gusts up to 30 mph.

While snow will fall statewide, it won't amount to much. Most of the state will only see about an inch of fresh snow. Up to three inches are expected near Bemidji.

Looking ahead, the workweek will be chilly with mornings dipping below zero. However, there will be a stretch of sunny days.

By next weekend, temperatures should warm back into the 20s.
