Bee Activists Hand Out Cookies In Pesticide Protest

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A group of gardeners and beekeepers are asking Home Depot stores to "show bees some love" during Valentine season.

"All we are saying is give bees a chance," demonstrators sang Wednesday outside a metro Home Depot store.

They were talking about recent research showing bees are dying because of some of the pesticides used on plants sold by places like Home Depot and Lowe's.

"Are we willing to die for chemicals? People have to think about it like that," said Dale Howey, a honey bee activist. "There's not a whole lot I'm willing to die for other than my family and my daughters. You know, are people really willing to die for chemicals?"

The group says customers aren't aware they're buying chemicals that are harmful to honey bees, which pollinate and help produce much of the food Americans eat.

Protesters wore bee costumes and delivered Valentine's Day cookies to consumers while asking the store to stop selling the pesticides.
