Beautiful Ice Caves Form On Lake Michigan

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A man in Northern Michigan discovered some spectacular ice caves forming on Lake Michigan.

When Eric Lepaugh saw mounds forming along the lakeshore, he made the trek out onto the frozen waters and found some spectacular ice caves.

"I thought it was amazing -- It is not big, and the opening is quite small, but when you get in here it opens up and there are these amazing icicles and stalagmites hanging down," he said. "That's what really caught my attention, because not every ice cave is the same.

Lepaugh says the great part about exploring the frozen lake is that you never know what you're going to find – each time can be different.

The ice is not yet thick enough on Lake Superior to visit the ice caves that formed there last year.
