Bear Stops Traffic In Savage

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A young bear disrupted traffic Friday morning in Savage before disappearing into the woods, according to police.

Authorities first received reports of the bear at about 5 a.m. when it attempted to cross Highway 13 near McColl Drive. Traffic stopped in both directions to allow the bear to pass.

More than 3 ½ hours later, witnesses saw the bear about one-mile south near Hwy. 13 and Connely Parkway.

The bear, which is estimated by the DNR to be about 1 ½-years-old, was last sighted heading into a wooded or swampy area off Hwy. 13 just after 10 a.m. The DNR says they only saw the bear in a witnesses' photo, and its quite rare to see the animal this far south.

Savage Police says this is the first-reported bear sighting in a long time. No one was hurt, and there is no threat to the public.

Witnesses say the bear seemed to be trying to get away from traffic and people.
