Barway Memorial To Bring White Roses To The Mississippi
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- An entire community is still grieving the death of 10-year-old Barway Collins.
A volunteer search group discovered his body just over a week ago in the Mississippi River. His dad, Pierre Collins, now faces murder charges in his son's disappearance.
Over the last month, hundreds of people have joined in numerous searches for the boy.
Most of the searchers never knew Barway but still volunteered their time with the goal of bringing closure to the case.
On Sunday, those volunteers will gather once again, this time to honor the boy's life.
The afternoon memorial follows a vigil Saturday that was organized by the family's pastor.
With Barway's dad behind bars and charged with murder, some in the community used the vigil to express their anger towards Barway's stepmom, who sat quietly throughout the vigil.
"We will not rest until everyone is brought to justice," said Pastor Harding Smith, a Collins family spokesman. "But we also need to walk a tight rope and know there's something called due process."
Sunday's memorial will take place at 2 p.m. at North Mississippi Regional Park.
Volunteers plan to release white roses into the river and sign a remembrance book that will be sent to Barway's mom in Liberia.
