Back-To-School Shopping Has Students Seeing Neon
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – School starts in less than a month for most kids, but school shopping has been in full swing for weeks.
The back-to-school section has been set up for weeks at the Walmart in Andover, Minn. and store manager Todd VanStraten says two big trends have emerged.
One is tried and true: the big movies are big sellers. And this year, that's Frozen and Captain America.
"You can get T-shirts, you can get pencils, you can get notebooks, you can get binders," he said. "Basically, anything you can dream up."
The other trend is newer: neon colors.
They are everywhere.
From the signs, to the bins, to everything in between, it's hard to find a school supply that doesn't come in a day-glow version.
"Pencils, notebooks, file folders," VanStraten said. "Pretty much anything that kids are bringing back to school these days, I'm seeing in color."
In many cases, the price is the same for color or regular, so the decision is relatively easy.
"I saw them," Stephanie, from Coon Rapids, said. "And they're the same price as the yellow pencils, so I figure make it more fun for them."
"It's just the trend," another mom said. "And you want them to be with the hippest trends out there."
And if you're looking for bargains, Walmart says it has 300 back-to-school items under $1, and 800 under $2. And until Thursday, there's an extra discount just for teachers.
"Teachers can come in to their local Walmart and get 10 percent off on more than 15,000 back-to-school items," VanStraten said.
