Authorities Search Lake Superior For Crashed Plane

DULUTH, Minn. (AP/WCCO) -- Authorities in Duluth are searching for a plane that may have crashed into Lake Superior.

Duluth Fire Department officials say that they have a boat out searching a possible debris field roughly 250 yards long which included the pilots log book and fuel jet, but visibility is poor due to the fog.

Fire officials say the initial report came from the Duluth International Airport tower at 11:30 a.m. Saturday. The tower lost contact with a single-engine plane with at least one occupant near Brighton Beach. And a witness told fire officials they had heard an impact near the beach.

The Coast Guard, State Patrol, Duluth Fire Department, Duluth Police Department and St. Louis County Rescue Squad are on the scene.
