Authorities Recover Body Of Swimmer From Lake Harriet

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office has recovered the body of a man from Lake Harriet in Minneapolis early Monday morning.

Hennepin County Water Rescue crews went out to the lake around 6:30 p.m. Sunday evening when witnesses say the 43-year-old man went under.

He was last seen near the dock of a designated swimming area on the north side of the lake.

Authorities said he had started swimming with family members while there was a break in the rain but that he was not a strong swimmer.

"It's deep water, he went down and apparently he wasn't a strong enough swimmer," Minneapolis Fire Battalion Chief Jeremy Morton said. "He went down and the family was right there, it happened like that. He was in distress and went under in deep water. It's just a real shame."

Crews searched for two hours before suspending the search due to lighting. After the weather cleared, divers went back in around 9:45 p.m.

His body was recovered around 2 a.m. Monday.

No information on his identity has been released.
