Authorities ID Teen Fatally Shot Outside Market Near George Floyd's Memorial In Minneapolis

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Authorities have identified a 17-year-old boy who was killed in a shooting outside of a market last week near the site of George Floyd's memorial.

Investigators say the teen and another male encountered each other inside the market on the east 3500 block of Chicago Avenue. The teen exited the store, and was then shot by the other male, who fled on foot.

Police say officers arrived at the scene to find the victim without a pulse. They performed CPR on him, and were able to regain it, but he died soon after at a local hospital.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's office identified the victim as Mario Sanchez Mendieta. He died due to multiple gunshot wounds, and the manner of death is ruled a homicide.

Investigators were unable to provide any information on the shooter, but say he knew the victim.

The shooting happened three blocks north of where George Floyd was killed while being arrested by four now-former police officers on Memorial Day -- sending shockwaves around the globe, and setting off the most destructive riots the United States has seen in a half century.
