Driver Dies After Rear-Ending SUV South Of Hibbing

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A driver not wearing a seatbelt was killed Tuesday night in a rear-end crash in northern Minnesota.

The Minnesota State Patrol says the crash happened around 8:30 p.m. on Highway 73 south of Hibbing. A Monte Carlo driven slammed into the back of a Range Rover near the Smith Road intersection, causing the Range Rover to flip on its side.

Killed in the crash was the driver of the Monte Carlo, identified as 49-year-old Thomas Michael Olson, of Virginia, Minnesota. Troopers say he was not wearing a seatbelt.

The driver of the Range Rover, a 62-year-old Apple Valley man, suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Emergency crews brought him to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Troopers say conditions were dry at the time of the crash. It's unknown if alcohol played a role.
