Sheriff: Armed Suspect Shot & Killed By Officer In Rochester

ROCHESTER, Minn. (AP) — Rochester Police Chief Roger Peterson is praising one of his officers who shot and killed a domestic assault suspect.

Peterson said Monday that the officer, Sgt. Steve Thompson, has been with the department for 19 years. He says Thompson has a "stellar record" and has numerous awards, including four for saving lives. He's a leader of the department's tactical team.

The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension says the shooting happened Sunday at the home near Lanesboro of 45-year-old Kristofer Daniel Youngquist. The BCA says Youngquist emerged carrying a rifle and pointed it at officers after a three-hour standoff. The gun was later determined to be a pellet gun.

The police chief declined to say much about the investigation, but said "nothing was done inappropriately."

Thompson was placed on standard administrative leave.
