ASPIRE Athlete Of The Week: Feb. 21, 2014

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- She is a shooter, and a leader on and off the basketball court.

Kyra Fredenburg's teammates at Anoka High School hope she can help carry them to a state tournament. She is our ASPIRE Athlete of the Week.

Fredenburg came to basketball almost by default.

"I was in second grade, and I couldn't succeed at soccer and I couldn't succeed at hockey or gymnastics," she said. "I always wanted to use my hands with everything, so I got into basketball, and it was just what I wanted to do."

What she does is set a tone. She's a leader for a talented team.

"Kids follower her, especially the underclassmen," said Scott Antl, her coach. "She helps out, she trains them. She helps with the youth programs."

The athlete of the week has an eye on March, and what she hopes is the perfect ending.

"Hoping to get to state," she said. "Just keep playing how we are right now."

She will play at Concordia University in St. Paul next year.
