As Spring Starts Apostle Islands Ice Caves Could Melt Fast

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – It's been an amazing winter for the Apostle Island Ice Caves, but there's a good reason why they're closed now.

A time lapse of the caves last year shows how nice the ice looks one day but just 24 hours later, most of the ice is gone.

Park Rangers there said even in January the ice conditions are never truly safe.

Wind and temperatures can cause a quick change out of nowhere.

Tourism leaders said the caves boosted the region's economy this year by 10 to 12 million dollars.
