As Hibernation Ends, DNR Releases 'Bear Aware' Tips

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- It's that time of the year when bears are coming out of hibernation, and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources wants to warn all homeowners near their habitat to be "bear aware."

Wildlife managers say bears come out of their dens in late March and early April.

The DNR advises those near bear habitats to get rid of any food sources that could attract the animals. Bears may be tempted by dog food, livestock feed, birdseed, compost, garbage, and even barbecues or grills, which should be cleaned and stored after each use.

For the name of the local wildlife manager, contact the DNR Information Center at 651-296-6157 or 888-646-6367, or you can use the DNR's office locator online to find the office closest to you. The DNR also has some useful information about bears on their website.
