2 arrested after shootout between Swift County deputies and man in Appleton, police say
A man and a woman are in custody after a shootout between the man and deputies with the Swift County Sheriff's Office in Appleton, Minnesota, on Friday, according to police.
A caller reported to county officials around 9:15 a.m. that two people, later identified as the man and woman, were breaking into a vehicle and firing a gun on the 100 block of Reuss Avenue. Deputies and police officers in Appleton and Benson responded to the area, officials said.
While law enforcement was responding, the caller reported the man and woman shot at a home on Reuss Avenue, according to police. Two deputies at the scene found them in a green SUV.
Police said the man and woman exited the vehicle and the man started shooting at the deputies.
"Shots were exchanged with the deputies and the male [man] and female [woman] suspects retreated into the vehicle," police said in a news release on Friday night.
Neither the man nor the woman was injured by the gunfire, according to officials.
Law enforcement set up a perimeter around the SUV after the man and woman refused commands to surrender. They "appeared under the influence of narcotics and were acting erratically," police said.
The man and woman left the vehicle after law enforcement deployed tear gas into it, according to officials. They were taken into custody shortly after.
According to police, the man and woman were treated at different hospitals before they were taken to jail and no deputies, officers or residents were injured in the incident.
A WCCO viewer submitted video showing people armed with long guns and tactical gear walking into a wooded area at the scene.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the incident.
Appleton is located about 150 miles west of the Twin Cities, and about 20 miles east of the South Dakota border.
