Apple Valley Police Warn Residents About Package Thefts

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A south metro police department is seeing an uptick in packages stolen from peoples' front steps.

In the last couple of weeks, Apple Valley police officers have gotten more calls about thieves stealing packages all over town.

They say this is a problem that can happen any time of year, not just around the holidays when more people are shipping gifts.

It's best if shoppers make sure someone must sign for a delivery or have items delivered while they are home. This is the type of crime that can happen in seconds.

"Opportunity is key for any type of crime prevention," said Capt. John Bermel, Apple Valley Police. "Where there is opportunity, there is possibility of crime, and it really doesn't matter what neighborhood you live in."

Police aren't sure if the thefts are related. They encourage neighbors not to be afraid to call 911 if they see something out of the ordinary or suspicious on their street.
