Apple Valley Couple Celebrates 70th Anniversary

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A couple from Apple Valley is celebrating a milestone every couple hopes they can reach.

Paul and Bee Carlson celebrated 70 years of marriage over the weekend. That's right, Franklin D. Roosevelt was president when they walked down the aisle back in 1944.

Paul is now 92 years old, and Bee is 90.

They met as teenagers at church.

Four children, six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren later, they're sharing their secret to a long-happy marriage.

"Marry someone that has a lot of patience," Paul Carlson said.

Bee Carlson said the two actually broke up while Paul was in the Army. He came home on leave and said they needed to get married because he was going overseas. So they planned their wedding in five days and never looked back.

"If you don't love each other, you wouldn't last that long," Bee Carlson said.
