Apostle Island Ice Caves May Open This Weekend

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The ice caves at the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore could be open to the public this weekend.

Officials are checking the ice on Wednesday.

Nearly 140,000 people visited the caves last year to see the frozen waterfalls and icicles.

Officials say the ice must be thick enough on the trail out to the caves for them to open for visitors.

There are concerns that windy conditions could cause the ice to break up.

If the caves are open, there will be a $5 fee for anyone 16 years and older.

There's also an annual pass available for $10.
