Allergy Season Arrives Right On Schedule

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- If you have noticed your eyes watering, and you are sneezing more than usual -- you are not alone.

Hennepin County Medical Center Allergy Specialist Dr. John Sweet says allergy season is right on time.

"We usually peak at the State Fair," Sweet said.

He says symptoms -- which first appear to be like cold-like -- include watery eyes, sneezing and itchy throats.

"But cold lasts about five days whereas allergy symptoms can last up to a month," he said.

If you are wondering if you can get allergies, even later in life, the answer is "yes."

"Particularly if one parent passes along the gene," Sweet said.

There are good over-the-counter medicines, but you should seek professional help if things get worse.

Other ways of getting relief include simply staying indoors, or if you're outside, wear those wrap-around sun glasses to protect your eyes.

And Sweet says it is a good idea to shower at the end of the day to wash away all that pollen for a better night's sleep.
