A Workout For The New Year: Barre

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – The new year is almost here, and so every day this week WCCO-TV is highlighting a different type of workout.

On Monday, reporter Ali Lucia traveled to Balanced Barre & Pilates in Wayzata to try the barre workout. It's a system that incorporates aspects of classical dance and focuses on core strength and balance. The workout gets its name from the use of a ballet barre, but it is not a dance class.

Studio owner Tina Fraser says barre has something for everyone.

"You can modify it to make it easier, and you can modify it to make it harder," she said. "I have people from 18 all the way up to 75 coming to class."

How will barre help you?

"It'll help with overall strength and flexibility," Fraser said, adding, "It'll tone you, give you muscle definition, help you lose weight. It does everything."

She says it's different from a workout like yoga, which involves lots of deep stretching.

"This is very active, you just go, go, go," Fraser said.

One class at Balanced Barre & Pilates costs $20, if you want to give it a shot. There's also a new-client, one-month special for $99.
