A Warning From The Better Business Bureau About Romance Scams
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- If you're looking for love online this Valentine's Day, beware of some scams out there.
Dan Hendrickson is with the Better Business Bureau. He said some red flags include the following:
- If the person asks to communicate using an outside email
- Anyone who declares their love for you too soon
- Requests for money or credit card information
- Someone who asks for personal information
Hendrickson said romance scammers can target anyone, but often target older individuals or those who are new to the Internet. He also said be leery if the person will not meet you face to face.
"Or if they say send me $500 and I can come to meet you," Hendrickson said.
Any request for money, he said, the red flags don't come any bigger than that.
"Any request for loans, you have to look out for yourself and say is this good for me," he said
He said scammers prey on emotion, and they're good at telling people what they want to hear. If you suspect you've been a victim of such a scam, you can call the Better Business Bureau at 1-800-646-6222.
