$94K Awarded To Suicide Prevention Programs In N.D.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota health officials have awarded nearly $94,000 to a number of schools and regional education associations for new and established suicide prevention programs.
The North Dakota Department of Health says results from a 2014 state survey released last month revealed startling rates of suicidal ideation and attempts among North Dakota's youth. The survey showed that 13.5 percent of high school students had made a plan to end their lives while 9.4 percent of high school students had attempted suicide within the last year.
The department awarded funding to Century High School and Bismarck High School for a program that teaches students and educators how to support those struggling with emotional challenges.
A tribal nonprofit organization serving schools within the Turtle Mountain Reservation is also among those receiving state funding.
