8th District Requested Recount Estimated To Cost Mills $102K

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Republican Stewart Mills will have to pay a pretty penny for a recount in Minnesota's 8th Congressional District.

The Secretary of State's office estimated Wednesday that Mills' requested recount will cost more than $102,000. Incumbent Democratic Rep. Rick Nolan beat Mills by more than half a percentage point on Election Day.

It was a narrow victory for Nolan but still outside the margin that triggers an automatic recount, for which the state would pick up the tab. Mills has said the race in northeast Minnesota was close enough that it merits a closer look.

Mills did not immediately respond to a request for comment. His campaign had $93,000 in the two weeks before Election Day.

If he agrees to pay, the recount could begin in some counties on Dec. 5.
