77 Percent Passage Rate For School Levies

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Education officials say Minnesota schools largely prevailed in Tuesday's election with requests for operating levies.

The Minnesota School Boards Association and the teachers' union Education Minnesota both say that 30 of 39 districts that had levies on the ballot passed at least one of the question. That's about 77 percent.

Education Minnesota said it was the lowest number of districts on the ballot since 1996, which the union said showed that devoting more state money to education has spared local taxpayers.

The school boards association said the success rate was about in line for most even-year elections. The rate surpassed the 56 percent in 2010 and 73 percent two years ago.

The association said most of the failing referendums were in the southwestern part of the state.
