5 Minnesotans Make Forbes 400 List Of Richest Americans

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Five Minnesotans are among the richest people in America, according to the Forbes 400 list released Monday morning.

The highest-ranking Minnesotan is former Cargill CEO Whitney MacMillian, who is number 133. The Minneapolis resident and great-grandson of William Cargill is worth $3.9 billion.

St. Paulite Stanley Hubbard, chairman and CEO of Hubbard Broadcasting, is number 322 with $2.1 billion. The majority of his wealth comes from DirecTV's acquisition of Hubbard's USSB satellite TV company in 1998.

Glen Taylor, owner of the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Star Tribune, is number 289. The self-made printing mogul (pictured) lives in Mankato.

And sisters Barbara Carlson Gage and Marilyn Carlson Nelson share number 383. The Long Lake residents own Carlson Inc., the hospitality and travel corporation. Their combined wealth is estimated at $1.6 billion.

Minnesota's presence on the Forbes 400 list has dwindled in the past several years. In 2008, nine Minnesotans made the cut. Three of them – Carl Pohlad, Cargill MacMillian Jr. and Mary Janet Cargill – have since passed away.

Best Buy founder Richard Schulze, currently number 243, is no longer a Minnesota resident.

For 21 years in a row, Bill Gates is number one with an estimated fortune of $81 billion.
