5 Minnesota Mayors Urge SCOTUS To Support Marriage Equality

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Five Minnesota mayors signed an amici curiae brief in support of marriage equality, which is being submitted to the U.S. Supreme Court as it prepares to hear arguments once again on whether to legalize same-sex marriage.

Among the mayors who signed the document were Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges and St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman.

The document argues that "excluding a certain class of people from marriage undermines the dignity and respect that government owes everyone.

"Marriage equality cannot have full meaning unless it is recognized uniformly across state lines," the brief continued.

The other three Minnesota mayors who signed the document were Duluth Mayor Don Ness, Falcon Heights Mayor Peter Lindstrom, and Lake Park Mayor Aaron Wittnebel.

Mayors for the Freedom to Marry represents 226 mayors from across the country.
