Woman Receives Nearly 4-Year Sentence In Fatal New Year's Eve Hit-And-Run

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A Minneapolis woman was sentenced to nearly four years in prison Monday for the New Year's Eve hit-and-run that killed a 37-year-old woman.

Donella Shanice Day, 28, pleaded guilty to criminal vehicular homicide after she struck and killed Aisha Freels last year.

The criminal complaint states Freels was crossing Lyndale Avenue North near 40th Avenue to get into a taxi when a blue sedan struck her. Emergency medical personnel declared Freels dead at the scene.

Day fled the scene. Three days later, she admitted to the hit-and-run and police arrested her thanks to a tip from an anonymous caller.

Day will also pay restitution to Freels' mother and the Minnesota Crime Victims' Reparation Board, police said.
