Mpls. Kicks Off Redesign Of Downtown's Third Avenue

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A major downtown Minneapolis thoroughfare is getting ready for a big makeover.

City officials say the redesign of Third Avenue, which stretches between 16th Street East and First Street South, will start Friday.

A protected bike lane will be added, which is the first of its kind for north-south traffic in the area.

Traffic and turn lanes will also be modified, and new greenery will be introduced.

Crews will start by taking out the median and re-paving between 16th Street and 12th Street.

Officials say the work will mostly wrap up by the end of the summer, with some finishing touches added early next construction season in 2017.
