22 Blocks Of Franklin Avenue Shut Down For Open Streets

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Once a month during the summer, the city of Minneapolis shuts down a busy street so neighbors can mix and play.

On Sunday it was Franklin Avenue East from Portland Avenue to 28th Avenue.

That's a 22-block stretch with people enjoying various activities in the middle of the street.

One of the most interesting sights was a pop-up park that featured cardboard and other art activities.

Plenty for the kids' imaginations.

"The idea is that kids can work collaboratively and just use imagination and build whatever they want. So we have a lot of cardboard, we have some fabric," Seinz Lennes, of Twin Cities Adventure Playground, said.

Organizers hope someday to build a permanent play park in Minneapolis.

They also told WCCO they weren't worried about the rain. The cardboard might get wet, but that's just part of the playing process.
