2 Wisconsin Men Die In Lake Superior Near Resort

TOFTE, Minn. (AP) — Two Wisconsin men have been identified as the victims of a fatal incident in Lake Superior near a Minnesota resort.

The Cook County sheriff's office said Wednesday that 40-year-old Evan Alexander Johnson of Menominee and 66-year-old Wayne Louis Hoffman of Spring Green died Tuesday afternoon near the Bluefin Bay Resort.

According to the official account, Johnson fell into the water first. Hoffman was pulled in by a wave as he attempted to rescue Johnson.

When authorities arrived, they were able to remove Johnson from the lake, but he died at an area hospital. The search for Hoffman took nearly seven hours and he was deceased when he was found.

Several emergency responders, including the U.S. and Canadian coast guards, participated in the search.
