2 killed in wrong-way crash on I-694 in Fridley

FRIDLEY, Minn. -- Two people are dead after a wrong-way crash on Interstate 694 in Fridley Monday evening.

According to the Anoka County Sheriff's Office, the incident occurred shortly before 10 p.m. on I-694 near University Avenue Northeast.

Officials say indications show a motorist in a 2014 Ford Fusion was traveling westbound on the eastbound lanes of I-694 and eventually crashed into an oncoming 2002 Lexus RX.

Both drivers were declared deceased at the scene. There were no other people involved.

The driver of the Lexus is identified as 78-year-old Mary Louise Ruegesegger of Mounds View.

The driver of the Ford is identified as 46-year-old Brooklyn Center man Julian Evan Griffin.

The state patrol says the Griffin was taking the ramp from University Avenue to eastbound I-694, but at the top of the ramp he turned and began driving westbound in the eastbound lanes of traffic.

An investigation is underway.
