1 Man Dies, Another Missing In Lake Superior

TOFTE, Minn. (AP) — One man has died and another is missing in Lake Superior after an attempted rescue at the Bluefin Bay resort in Tofte.

The Cook County sheriff's office got a call around 3 p.m. Tuesday of a man in the water. A 66-year-old who was trying to rescue the 40-year-old, then got pulled into Lake Superior himself by a large wave.

The 40-year-old was pulled from the lake and was pronounced dead at Cook County North Shore Hospital.

The Coast Guard is still searching for the 66-year-old, but icing conditions have prevented the use of helicopters.

The news release didn't say why the first man went into the lake, and a dispatcher had no further details. Waves were reported to be between 4 and 6 feet.

Names have not been released.
