Woman Accused Of Boating Drunk In Fatal Crash Faces Charges

MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- A woman accused of boating drunk and killing a South Florida man is facing charges.

Investigators said Marcella Hewett, 50, was driving a boat in the Dania Cutoff Canal on December 20 when she crashed into a bridge piling.

David Duda was a passenger on the boat and died in the crash.

Search warrants in the case show that there were open containers of beer in the boat and that Hewett appeared to be drunk.

Court documents also show that surveillance video of the accident reveal that Hewett waited about 30 minutes before reporting the crash to 911.

Duda's family told CBS 4 News they are devastated by David's death and are hoping for justice.

Hewett faces charges of BUI manslaughter, vessel homicide, failure to give information or render aid and tampering with physical evidence.
